William Lycanwood (2008)

William Lycanwood was a 19th Century astronomer, chemist and friend to John Herschel. Recently a partially destroyed case of photographs and notes was found at the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge. Although in poor condition these images seem to show portraits of William himself, along with strange celestial bodies which can not be identified. The images continue to baffle photo-historians and astronomers.

Few records remain which mention William Lycanwood; many documents seem to have been destroyed after a disagreement between himself and the Cambridge Astronomical Society. One certainty is that William Lycanwood was declared insane and committed to Bethlem Royal Hospital, where he spent the rest of his days. The mysteries surrounding William and his 'Telescopic Image Intensifier' are still under investigation.
